What Did the Deer See?

Shadows on the snow;
Icicles shine in the sun;
Branches bob in breeze.

Despite the bright sun
Icicles are not dripping.
World is still silent.

Perching on the fence
Autumn totem has grown old
With its cap of white.

Even milkweed husk
Has received the falling snow
Like it was a seed.

Where's the running stream?
Seen only by the snow banks
That mark its passage.

The old wooden fence
Sliding below the snow bank;
Giving up the ghost.

Tracks into the woods
Swirl around and then return.
What did the deer see?

Deep beneath snow bank
Roadside stream lies sleeping
Dreaming of the Spring.
