Swallows Emptiness

Crystal hummingbird
Flies near my kitchen window
With still clarity.

The whiteness still rules--
Bleak snow fields in this gray day.
Where is Spring hiding?

 Forsythia husk
With its empty hungry mouth
Swallows emptiness.

Two dull walkway lights
Unlit in the morning gloom;
Provide only hope.

 Even red car lights
Give a note of Christmas cheer
On this dark gray morn.

All signs point to it--
The gray full sky and chilled air:
More snow is coming.

Perched on a snow bank--
Ruins of an ice palace
Built by the fairies.

Among the sumac
A chubby bird sits and waits
Joining silhouettes.
