All Tracks are Frozen

 Bitter cold again;
Spring is only teasing us,
Playing hide and seek

 In like a lion,
March roars with its icy breath.
Where is the rabbit?

Light snow on the walk
Makes an instant mosaic--
Winter artistry.

 Suspended in air
A cloud hangs beneath a cloud--
Layers of dark light.

Frozen footprints stretch,
Extending into the past;
Fixed for a moment.

Furry companion
Meets me on this frozen road;
We walk together.

The road is empty;
Ice wind sighing in the woods;
All tracks are frozen.

The ancient boulder
Sprouts a new growth of gray ice--
Its winter whiskers.
