The World is Softened

The world is softened
In the settled waves of mist;
Rain is kept at bay.

Phone poles disappear
Parading through the thick mist.
Still, the Basset barks.

Jogger on the road
Smiles and calls me by my name.
(Who the hell is he?)

Once again clear drops
Poised on the edge of tree limbs--
Windows and mirrors.

Bike and the lamp post
Sit silently side by side--
Mutual disuse.

A yellow porch light
Is a beacon in the gloom.
The mist brought silence.

Bright cluster of ferns
Seems greener in the gray mist.
Tree tops are softened.

Sumac skeletons
Silhouette against the sky;
Been there since last year.
