Day of Sharp Shadows
Dark crisp shadows fall
On a carpet of brown leaves;
Evergreens contrast.
Black stripes in the road;
Sharp shadows of a stop sign;
Trees, bushes, flatten.
It's past Halloween;
Ghostly gray feather plants sway;
The witches have flown.
Just one yellow leaf
Drifting swiftly to the ground
Will soon curl and brown.
Day of sharp shadows--
Tree limbs, fences and bushes
Flattened on the road.
Tasseled brown on brown;
Fallen branches on dead leaves.
Just the sky is blue.
Pail and witch's hat;
Hanging Christmas ornaments--
All on a mail box.
Friend in a pickup
Slows down and we chat a while,
Clench hands and move on.
