Fragrance of Lilacs

Fragrance of lilacs
Mixes with roasting coffee--
May morning bouquet.

Sunlit morning leaves
Combine with my idle thoughts--
A strange alchemy.

Two woodpeckers peck,
Rattling their hollow fugue
Across expanse of trees.

Running water sound
Precedes the sight of the stream--
Moving harbinger.

Growing untended
Lilacs thrive by the road side;
They're wild and free.

As he comes closer,
Cyclist on the road travels
Through light and shadow.

Humming in the air
As the bees move busily
Sucking from springtime.

Old emperor stump
Now dwarfed by pine courtiers
Which provide it shade.
