Winking at the Road

Silent wind chime sways
Next to my bedroom window.
It has lost its tongue.

Rhododendron drops
Its shadow on my front porch;
Temporary stain.

Shadow up a tree--
Silent bird flutters upward
Neither heard nor seen.

New sign in the road
Marking a biking contest,
That's already passed.

A friend stop to talk
For only two brief minutes;
Then my step lightens.

Shadows on the road;
Whispering wind in the woods;
Soft clouds in the sky.

Scattered on the earth--
Yellow spots on barren ground:
Dandelions grow!

Hiding in a bush,
Errant Christmas ornament
Winking at the road.

With great amazement
The man in the tree looks out
While closing one eye.
