Drops in the Sunlight

Sunlight on water--
Drops light up forsythia;
Mist enveloping the field

Shadows through the trees;
Sun makes phantoms in the mist.
Happy first of May!

Where are they rushing,
Inexorable swift streams
Racing past my house?

Streams become rivers;
Empty lawn becomes a lake.
Those April showers.

Drops in the sunlight
Hang suspended and shining;
Each one a clear globe.

The old dry stream bed
No longer dry, holds rushing
Swift, frantic water.

Mourning dove's blessing
On the freshly baptized earth
Wakens the mountain.

Small roadside river
Flows swiftly down the mountain
Singing urgently.

No blood from this rock,
Just a few green growing plants
Hosted by hardness.

A bundle of kids
Laying out on the warm lawn--
Like happy laundry.
