Some Things Never Change

Twenty-four degrees--
A veritable heat wave!
Temporary shift.

Earth is showing through;
Brown patches under the snow
Rises to the surface.

Shadow in the tree
Greets me each sunny morning.
Some things never change.

The smell of cow shit
Steaming and warm from the barn,
Evokes memories.

 Through the thick bushes,
Liquid mirror stream flourishes
Unfrozen again.

Into the shadows--
Animal tracks in the snow
Slowly disappear.

A black shadow now,
As it melts into the tree:
Decaying fungus.

The old milk weed husk
Seed pod hanging and soggy
Still waits for a chance.
