Urgent Persistence

Swooping through light beams
Chickadees land on dry seeds,
Peck and then fly off.

The incoming birds
Signal the outgoing birds,
Flutter of traffic.

 Olivia stands
In the snow and the shadows,
A bovine statue.

 On top of his tree
The cardinal repeats his cry--
His own song of hope.

Drilling woodpecker
Pecks at the frozen tree trunk--
Urgent persistence.

 Woods are so silent
Covered with snow and shadows;
Distant wind chimes ring.

Flying straight at me
Bird comes to a gentle stop
Before the window.

The woods are singing
Wordless and high pitched ditties
Songs for all seasons.
