Melting Tracks in the Snow

Snow line receding;
Sun lights up forsythia;
Pickup truck drives past.

Melting tracks in snow
Become dark holes in the ground--
History erased.
Under the whiteness
The rich brown darkness of earth--
Rising of the spring.

On brown slender stalks
The husks of flower linger:
Silhouetted shells.

A shining red light
Peeks out from the side of road;
Looks for a party.
 Shrunken snow woman--
Shadow of her former self,
Doesn't have a head.

Brown leaf, red pine bough
Lie on dirt speckled snow bank--
Refuse of winter.
The streams are running,
Yet the air is icy cold;
Water has risen.
