Wooden Resistance

The days get longer;
Groundhog Day is approaching.
Still, I sleep later.

Woodpecker is poised
Outside my kitchen window--
Feeder as tree worms.

Despite the cold breeze
He munches happily on grass.
(He's got a fur coat).

Stopping and chatting
We share stories about death.
Then we both move on.

Pounding on the hill:
Unseen management of things--
Wooden resistance.

Suspended in air,
Fallen tree limb has become caught
By fellow branches.

Yesterday's mirror--
Today's opaque sheet of ice
At the roadside pond.

Climbing up the hill
While never losing its place:
The ancient stone wall.
