Flashing Mirrors Under Green

 It's late afternoon;
Sun is softer on the ground;
Everything seems greener.

 Weeds between fence slats
Grow proudly as a rose.
Who's to tell them "No"?

The old wooden owl
Has melted into the tree.
It won't fly away.

 As the sun goes down
It leaves flames in the flowers;
(Do they shine at night?)

Where has the stream gone?
Flashing mirrors under green;
Verdant camouflage.

Poised as if to leap;
Grasshopper is still as ice.
Doesn't know it's dead.

The poppers are back
Inviting kids to smash them--
Pop! (on their hands) Pop!
