Just Shadows on Snow
It's thirteen degrees;
No foot prints show near the barn,
Just shadows on snow.
In the sunlit freeze
Darkness marks where the stream lives.
Even dogs don't bark.
The yawning mail box
Waits for a mouthful of snow;
Won't have to wait long.
Shadows sprout in woods
Striping and twisting on snow
Without a movement.
No sound or motion;
Birds don't sing and dogs don't bark--
February freeze.
Buttocks under snow:
Nature imitating life--
A buried snow queen.
By abandoned house
A car pulls over and stops.
The house does not mind.
Rippling darkly
Tree shadows wave on the snow
Following each curve.
