The Sky is Unfolding

The sky is unfolding;
Gossamer white floats to earth
The world is a blur.

They are so silent,
These billion flakes of fine snow;
Landing without sound.

Bobbing in the bushes,
Birds dance lightly in the snow
Shifting foot to foot.

The road is crunchy;
I stop, listen to silence
And the wind's murmur.

Vast blankness settles
On the road and in the woods--
Absence of color.

The bend is unknown;
For in the road is blankness;
Pick-Up disappears.

Dead leaf in the road--
Darkness in a field of white.
Old tree creaks in woods.

Coming and going--
My tracks are slowly erased;
Soon, they're memories.

I pause and listen;
Silence as vast as the snow
Descends upon me.

Cornucopia

Bright streaks on the road
Breaking brilliance in the sky.
The sun is shining

Motion through the trees,
Either a swift animal
Or a passing car.

Through the thick barn walls
Think small rays of light shine through
From the other side.

Small translucent cup
On its side filled with dry leaves
Cornucopia.

The house is empty--
Winter light fills the rooms.
Nothing moves inside.

Roadside Kleenex lies;
Mysterious, distinguished
In the sun's shadows.

Gossamer seed pod
Here frozen and turned to ice.
No breeze will blow them.

A racing of trucks,
Leaving dust clouds in their wake;
(One telephone pole.)

 Hell freezes over;
Still the water is flowing
In Peter's wood tub.

A Garrulous Bird

 Blinding, the sun's rays
Blushing bright in the branches.
Just above zero.

 Sun rays that won't melt;
Lying flat upon the snow
Waiting there to thaw.

Frigid the swings hang;
No child to sit upon them
Or to warm their seats.

Long past Christmas tree
Lies fuzzy in the bushes;
No longer distinct.

Logs over stream beds
Two bridges over nothing
In this winter freeze.

Formed by plow and sun,
Round dunes stand by the road side;
(They do not shiver)

A garrulous bird
Keeps on asking a question
Flying through the air.

The woods are silent;
Still, shadows lie on the road.
Everything's frozen.

Dim Eye in the Sky

Dim eye in the sky;
Sun shines through a cataract
Of milky white clouds.

It's too cold to snow;
Even the clouds hang frozen
In the blank stillness.

Thin plants shivering;
Rough the wind upon their limbs
As it passes through.

The errant fence post
Leaning against his fellow
With savoir faire

It's so bitter cold
That my fingers freeze at once
When they leave their gloves.

Sinewy fat vine
Snake itself through the bush
Turns into shadows.

Frozen footsteps lie
Undisturbed where they were left;
Their owners moved on.

The tree stump is blank;
All rough spots have been removed;
Snow is the smoother.

I Forget the Gloom

Brown branches on snow;
Green fir trees above it all;
Everything silent.

Parked up on white dunes--
Bare brambled sticks of last Spring;
The birds are hidden.

Hung over the road--
Silhouette against the sky:
Forsythia bud.

Two amber beacons
Burn in the old farm house
Lighting up the gloom.

Jogger is singing,
Waving her arms all about;
A crazy delight.

Frozen and writhing
The tree, tumbling to the ground,
Becomes a monster.

It is dark as dusk
Snow is humming in the air;
Airplane murmurs far.

Incessant grinding
Moving louder up the hill,
Becomes a dump truck.

In this pregnant gloom,
Jennie stops to talk and smile;
(I forget the gloom).
