Watching the smart squirrel
Eating from my bird feeder.
(Morning frustration.)
Weather's liquid gray;
Finally, the birds are back,
Beating out the squirrel.
Water is all around
In the air, the field, the streams--
The sun is absent.
Beyond the bent fence
An old stream has been reborn--
Spring Hallelujah!
Some last piles of snow
Linger like trash by the roadside--
Refuse of winter.
Near side of the road
Stream announces its presence
With sparkling burble.
Dead brown evergreens
Have lasted through the winter.
(And they are still dead.)
Free steel frying pan
Offers its own free present:
Gift of rain water.
