School bus rounds corner,
Faces unseen in windows.

It could be empty.

Crisp pile of firewood
Lies in cool October sun,
Waiting to give warmth.

Old blue bandanna
Lies neatly on the dead leaves
(Which need no cover).

The curtains are drawn;
The barn is quiet and still;
One bulb burns inside.

A card in the road
Says it will do construction.
Leaves will cover it.

My toes are freezing;
My finger tips are tingling.
Still I wear sandals?

Stopping in the woods
I happily take a pee.
Do leaves think it's rain?

The sunny hillside--
Deer stops to look up at me
Or just knows that I'm there

The house is empty
Still, old cat sits on the porch.
Some creatures don't move.

Orange reflector
Has it's moment of union
With the orange leaves.

Shriveled dark and dry
Leaves have withered on the stalk.
No echo of green.

Geese Call Across the Sky

Leaf window shadow;
A cold October morning;
Dove sits on a wire.

Walking down the road

Gray haired man hunches forward--
Shadow of myself?

Garlanding tree stump
Luminescent red leaf strand.
Geese call across sky.

Trembling in the breeze
Sharp shadows on the fence post
Try to come to life.

Follow the leader
Small birds hop from branch to branch;
Below, squirrel bustles.

Pine needles, dead leaves
As far as the eye can see
Soften forest floor.

Yellow, brown and red
The woods slip into autumn
Like a party dress.

Gracefully bending
Vibrant green ferns against brown;
Unfazed by autumn.

Shaking in the breeze
Milkweed seeds try to break free
From the mother pod.

Fetish of an owl
Stands on a russet carpet,
Propped up by the tree.

"Please don't feed the goats";
The cow walks blithely past it.
She does not worry.

Crows in the slate gray sky
Circle above yellow trees.
There is no sunshine.

Solitary leaf
Caught in the camera's eye;
Million others missed.

Hanging from the branch
A few dead leaves still remain--
The whim of the wind.

En route to the ground
Two red leaves catch in the trunk;
Not far from home.

Rustle on the road--
My feet crush a leaf carpet;
Pickup swirls it up.

Instant of sunshine
Lights up leaves and throws shadows;

Then it disappears.

"Natural Value,"
The scouring pad label says
Resting in nature.

Small asters still bloom
Whiter on the brown background--
Forecast of the snow.

Shadows to the tree
Run across the leaf strewn woods
Like two dark pathways.

Some light rimmed bushes
In their moment of glory
Back lit by the sun.

Catch a Falling Leaf

Pine cones by the road;
Red maple leaf lies there, too;
And blue chicory.

The field is silent;

The grass all points the same way--

Does it know something?

Leaves fall all around
Floating gently to the ground
And making no sound.

Hunched over the bars
Cyclist pedals up the a hill;
A fluid fatigue.

Catch a falling leaf
As it slips away slyly
On its journey down.

A fearless kitty
Stalks out of the deep dark woods
To get some scratching.

She will not leave me,
This love addicted kitty.
Will she ever go?

Shadow of a leaf
Like a Halloween pumpkin--
Art imitates art.

Carpets of Brown Leaves

Carpets of brown leaves
Lie in the afternoon calm
Flecked by soft sunlight.

Silken milkweed seeds
Float under the blue mailbox
Straining to take off.

Their backs rimmed with sun
Three goats graze in the twilight;
One of them looks up.

Late afternoon sun
Filters through the light green leaves
And makes not a sound.

Lying on the ground
Curled desiccated brown leaf--
Its shadow is longer.

The bend of the road:
Blur of golden glowing leaves;
Tribute to the sun.

Flashes of sunlight
Illuminate the red leaves--
Shadows in shadows.

There's my old pooch friend
Sleeping near his empty house.
Oh! It's just a rock.

After all these years
Broken window in the house
Empty forever.

Black and white flutters
In the red berry bushes--
Chubby nervous birds.

Ghostly white berries
Sway against dark russet leaves--
Color paucity.

Autumn Hide and Seek

Moisture on the leaves;
Sunlight on the shiny road--
Shifting September day.

Bright vermilion leaves
Lie with a grass canopy
On a dark brown bed.

Falling from the sky
Leaf is trapped in tiny blooms;
Temporary rest.

Leaves are floating down
They make no sound as they fall;
Rain patters in woods.

Sunlight patch ahead--
Grass glows like a green beacon,
Then slowly grows dim.

Peekaboo sunlight;
Peekaboo gray cloud cover:
Autumn hide and seek.

Brown leaves in white shroud
Hang suspended in the tree--
Thousand silent mouths.

Twisting around wire
Poison ivy grows higher--
Green and rusted brown.

Short Break

When my grand daughter, Lucy, was born almost five years ago I swore that there would be no more than three months separating us. At the time, she, her mom and dad, lived in Seattle. I was true to my word. Either I was there or they were here and every autumn I spent a month there. Now, they have moved to New Haven, Connecticut. It's a lot closer but I still will spend a month there. So, until October 12, I will be away from Yerry Hill Road. I do hope to put some haiku on my site, Haiku To You (http://haikutoyouto.blogspot.com/) See you in a month.
