Lilacs are Shaking

Strong breeze is blowing
Across the sun drenched bushes;
Lilacs are shaking.

Wind chill in the air;
Squirrel races across the porch.
Still, the bright sun shines.

Caught in the branches
Fallen pine cone still hangs high
With a new mom.

Growing round the stump
Yellow blooms ring the dead wood--
A funeral wreath.

Last forsythia
Hang limp, waiting for the wind;
Beyond them--lilacs.

Voices of the wind
Bellowing from the forest
Tremble the tall trees.

Pastel waves of blue
Lying deep in the forest
Light up the darkness.

Still no water flows
Under the makeshift wood bridge;
Only the wind howls.

Black and Yellow Suspended

Olivia's mouth
Opens in some trumpet moo's.
I can't answer her.

Floating above blue--
Black and yellow suspended:
Bumble bee,  hunting.

Fragrance of Lilacs

Fragrance of lilacs
Mixes with roasting coffee--
May morning bouquet.

Sunlit morning leaves
Combine with my idle thoughts--
A strange alchemy.

Two woodpeckers peck,
Rattling their hollow fugue
Across expanse of trees.

Running water sound
Precedes the sight of the stream--
Moving harbinger.

Growing untended
Lilacs thrive by the road side;
They're wild and free.

As he comes closer,
Cyclist on the road travels
Through light and shadow.

Humming in the air
As the bees move busily
Sucking from springtime.

Old emperor stump
Now dwarfed by pine courtiers
Which provide it shade.

School in a Hammock

School in a hammock
Seems like a good place to be--
Relaxing research.

Small bird through the screen
Hops about from branch to branch--
Nervous, persistent.

Lilacs in my yard
Move slowly towards fruition;
I, only, can't wait.

Singing in the yard,
Sound barely reaches the fence--
Three light voices lift.

Deep in the forest
Woodpecker rattles his tune:
Morning percussion.

Dandelion puff
Next to the blooming flower
Foretells its future.

Sprinkles in the sky
Small flowers from a tall tree
Twinkle their faint light.

Smiling she said "hi";
Now, she's a speck on the road.
Hello's and good bye's.

Bright spirit of May;
In the blossoms and the sun
And light dancing feet.

Even Dead Leaves Glow

Pattern of blue blooms
Has taken over my lawn--
A runic design.

Sunshine leaves merge
Into a bright green pattern--
Melting of substance.

Clusters of sun spots
Gather bright by the roadside--
Dandelions grow.

At top of the hill
A small but distinct presence:
A black and white cat.

Shiny russet leaves
Seem supremely innocent.
(They're poison ivy!)

Discarded dog shit
Still in its black plastic bag.
How has it survived?

All buds are brighter
In the light of early May.
Even dead leaves glow.

Mysterious path
Has sprung up next to the road.
(New just to my eyes?)
