The Scent of Autumn

Sunday, August 24, 2014

Light luring me out
To the dappled yellow leaves--
The scent of Autumn.

Light through the leaves
Forms an umbrella of sun
Painted with shadows.

Light violet clover
Sits among blue chicory
With bee for a friend.

Wood bench and jogger--
Two familiars on the road.
(And with me, it's three.)

Sitting in the sky
Puffy white clouds do nothing
But play with the sun.

Shadows mold the woods,
Dance noiselessly on the road;
Nurture the asters.

Fallen leaves on road--
Mottled brown with insect bites:
Dead faces smiling.

It's butter and eggs;
That's my breakfast this morning.
(Flower reminds me.)

Brightness all around;
The sun captures the landscape--
Swift and silently.

 Shadows of chickens
In the woods of my neighbor
Bobbing and pecking.

Seashells on my porch,
Far from the ocean's edge
And the clear salt air.

The neighbor's cat waits,
For her friend, my cat Stella,
Dead nearly four years.

Journey on their bikes--
Mother and son to see goats
In the empty field.

Always the brown leaves
Hang among the vibrant green--
Nature's reminder.

Goldenrod hopping;
There's no time for scenery.
Busy as a bee.

The old bridge log lies
Across the ditch of green grass.
Doesn't wonder why.

Echoes in a Dream

The green leaves tremble
As breeze from the passing car
Shudders the still air.

 Rain drops on the plant
Glisten in the morning sun.
(Seems like it's smiling.)

Dark clouds in the sky;
Pampas grass bends with the wind;
A flash of sunshine.

Faint chirping voices
Drift from the house on the hill;
Echoes in a dream.
How green are the woods:
Rolling waves of verdant grass;
Rhapsody of life.

 They don't wave at me--
Busy city visitors,
Though I wave at them.

The sky is gray, dark;
Cool breeze blows across my face
As I journey home.

Small bits of orange--
Jewel weed sprinkles the green bush;
A gentle bursting.

This Sacrosanct Day

Happy indoor plant,
Outside, waving to the sun;
Growing to the sky.

Even the autos
Drive by with worshipful "whoosh"
This sacrosanct day.

 Just Olivia--
"Alfred's butchered," Susan says.
Just Olivia.

Dead leaf on the ground,
Waiting to be blown away
From the verdant lawn.

Delicate white bloom
Doesn't know that it's beautiful--
Nobody's told it.

White snowball flowers
Nodding in the gentle breeze
Agree on something.

Shadows draw their lines
On the barn red garage door
With forgiving pens.

Dead leaf on the road,
Freshly fallen and still green
Has no where to go.

Welcoming Me Home

Soft shadows on tree
Falling at the end of day,
Welcoming me home.

Shadow of the tree
Dark through the green morning light
Presides as day breaks.

 "Swing low, swing low sweet.."
Man sings walking past my door;
"Chariot.." on by
.

Alone on the lawn
A delicate wire fence
Protecting a rock.

Reflecting the sky:
Chicory by the roadside;
Beacon of Autumn.

Rusted, old and still:
Prehistoric in the woods--
A flat roller sits.

 A fork in the road
In two shadowed directions;
I go to the right.

 Bursting at the top--
Delicate yellow flowers
Smiling at the sun.``

 Deserted garden,
Now Nature's hysteria--
Riot of wild plants.
