Down Lofting Down Lofting Down

 Fast white flakes falling,
Down lofting down lofting down
To blank white expanse.

How softly they fall,
Pieces of sky falling downward
Rushing through slowly

The road is silent;
Birds fluttering to the trees
Look out on lightness.

My tracks behind me
Are soon going to be swallowed
By a million mouths.

Shadow on driveway--
Fixed memory of a car
Soon to be erased.

Snow is lessening
Dusty white specks fill the sky;
Now the cars come out.

Stump at end of a pole
Hinting at a new found game
Played there in the forest.

Dead suspended leaf
Hanging there since last Autumn;
Is it going to make the Spring?

Misty the snow falls,
Blurring the trees and landscape
Into white softness.

Iced Light and Iced Dark

Fake red roses sit
On my dim kitchen table
Lighting up the day.

Lawn and trees are white;
The sky sheds only gray light;
Then, dream-like ray of sun.

Small frozen footprints
Of animals and small kids;
Their owners long gone.

Sun has broken out,
The streams are racing swiftly
Past small snow islands.

 Fence slats on the snow
Seem as if they are frozen:
Iced light and iced dark.

The half cocked mailbox
Looks like it asks a question.
(I hear no answer).

Through sunlit brambles
White being shimmers softly:
Ghost is eating hay.

Ghost is curious;
Comes to see if I have food;
Then loses interest.

Touch of a White Brush

Stark whiteness returns;
Lawn and porch and wood railings
Frosted like a cake.

My little bird house
Sits like a picture postcard
Waiting for Santa.

Beaten down at last
Proud Pompous vanquished by snow;
Their Spring shine is gone.

Touch of a white brush
And the stumps become old men--
Overnight magic!

Returning to Earth

Sparkles on the porch--
Mix of sun and light on wood;
Morning radiance.

White frost on the lawn--
Blue jay hops and turns his head;
Day has just begun.

Sun plays on the stump,
Bringing out darkness and light;
Sculpting with shadows.

No longer ladder--
Parallel light and dark depths
Revealed by the sun.

A lone blurred sparkle
Hanging from the slender branch:
A drop of the sun.

Covered with lichen,
Broken limb lies on the ground
Returning to earth.

Seemingly liquid
A smooth shiny stretch of road;
Better watch my step!

All of a sudden
Bright sunlight has left the earth--
Cloaked clouds have returned.

Murmurs of Winter

My year's first haiku;
Looking at dim sky again.
Has anything changed?

The snow splintered bank
On the other side of street
Murmurs of winter.

Snow has come and gone;
Gray piles replace white blankets;
Ice yields to water.

Bleating of a goat;
Soft ripples across the field;
A plaintive desire.

The shiny beer can
Lies next to the filthy snow--
Two ugly remnants.

Under these gray skies
Dry brown leaf covered stream bed
Springs to liquid life.

Bent over the road
Workman points his magic wand
To suck detritus.

Released for a time,
Roadside stream flees from the ice,
Burbling downward.
